Scholar-Leaders Program

Lucie Flekova

Czech Republic, 2007–08

The GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Program was the first significant success in my career, and what I didn’t know yet by that time, a great kick-off for the future of my professional life. Also, I appreciate more and more another message that GE Foundation gave me: life is not all just about career and money.  The community service that I’ve done during all these years fulfills me with happiness, as I can see all around that even a little help, just a little bit of good will to do something, can lead to great results.

Lucie Flekova won the GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Award of the Czech Republic in 2007. She is a student at two prestigious universities in the Czech Republic. At the University of Economics in Prague, she is pursuing her Master’s degree in International Relations in Economics, and simultaneously, at The Czech Technical University in Prague , Faculty of Nuclear Science and Physical Engineering, she is going to obtain her second master’s in Software Engineering. In the 2007–2008 academic year she won the Erasmus scholarship and she studied in Finland at the Oulu University of Applied Sciences, School of Business and Information Management. She did a one year training in Business and Information Technology, where besides system development, database design, international business and web animations she also studied the Finnish language.

The following summer Lucie won an internship in CERN (European Center for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland, where she worked as a C++ programmer and developer. Even after her internship was over she kept a tight connection to CERN, participating externally on software development , and designing new database architecture for one of the high energy physics experiments. She is also planning to spend a year in Geneva to finish her diploma thesis on this topic and possibly giving shape to her PhD studies as well. Currently she is a project manager at Ogilvy & Mather Adventures, an online media services company and she is leading and managing online projects such as website production, intranets, e-shops, and flash games. Besides her job and her double majors, Lucie still finds time for her hobbies which are playing in a women’s soccer team, racing on roller skates, writing poetry, painting, and playing chess.
